The NBA’s Midseason Tournament Offers Coaches a Shot at $500,000 Prize

The NBA’s fresh midseason competition will not just provide financial rewards for players, but also for coaches. The winning team’s head coach will receive a handsome sum of $500,000, which is the same amount set aside for the players. As for the assistant coaches, they will divide 75 percent of the total awarded to the winning coach. However, the prize pool will shrink for both coaches and players as they advance to the runner-up, semifinalist, and quarterfinalist stages. The notion of incentivizing coaches with extra money was deliberated upon during a meeting with the league’s coaching leadership and Commissioner Adam Silver. As for the players, their portion of the tournament revenue was collectively negotiated with the National Basketball Players Association. By implementing this tournament, the NBA anticipates generating substantial revenue and boosting interest and viewership during the regular season. The competition kicks off with a four-game group play bracket on Friday, ultimately leading up to the final four games on December 7 and 9 in Las Vegas.
