Lionel Messi Makes History with Eighth Ballon d’Or Win in Major League Soccer

Lionel Messi, a player for Inter Miami CF, has secured his eighth Ballon d’Or title, setting a new record. This achievement comes after surpassing competition from Erling Haaland of Manchester City. Messi’s remarkable win is primarily attributed to his outstanding performance in leading Argentina to victory in the World Cup last year. Notably, he is the first player based in Major League Soccer (MLS) to claim this prestigious award. The trophy was presented to Messi by David Beckham, former Manchester United player and co-owner of Inter Miami, in Paris. Haaland, known for his impressive 52 goals scored last season, finished second in the voting and was granted the Gerd Muller Trophy for being the best striker. Other notable awards included Emiliano Martinez winning the Yachine Trophy for best goalkeeper and Jude Bellingham receiving the Kopa Trophy as the top player under 21. Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or adds to his previous victories in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2021. Demonstrating his exceptional skills, Messi netted 21 goals across 41 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain last season and has already scored 11 goals in 14 games for Inter Miami. The remarkable performance he showcased at the World Cup, culminating in Argentina’s triumph, cemented his claim to the Ballon d’Or. Throughout the tournament, Messi impressively contributed seven goals and assisted in three more, earning him recognition as the Player of the Tournament. At the age of 36, he holds the distinction of being the second oldest player to receive this esteemed award.
